Parents complete a pre-session questionnaire and we will have a conversation to identify your child’s strengths and challenges. If their school teacher is happy to contribute, they can complete a short questionnaire too. In the initial session/s, we will explore what your child knows already through some low-pressure games and activities and discuss with the child their goals. Learning objectives are drawn up and shared and these are regularly reviewed.

Lessons are tailored to exactly your child’s needs, but a typical lesson will follow a routine that works for them. It will review prior learning, gently move onto new concepts and explore these through low-pressure games and activities until they’re overlearned and beginning to become automatic. The lessons are paced to suit your child and I work collaboratively with parents and child to get this right for them.

This depends on what your child needs. Primarily reading and spelling, or a focus on one or the other. If needed, we also work on the foundational skill of Phonological Awareness. This a prerequisite for Literacy - the ability to discriminate sounds and the skills to manipulate them. Your child might need support with Phonics - the sound-letter correspondence - and when this is secure, we will move to more complex spelling patterns.
I am also able to support with wider Literacy skills. We might choose to include some work on grammar and sentence structures, building vocabulary or developing planning skills for writing.

At your home after or before school. Or if the school allows it, I am happy to visit the school during the school day. I offer the option of short daily practise tasks to parents to keep the learning fresh between sessions.

I am based in Bishopston and generally work across North Bristol including St Andrews, Montpelier, Redland, Cotham, Horfield, Westbury, Henleaze, Stoke Bishop and Clifton. I’m always happy to have a chat to see if we can make it work.

No problem, a report is not necessary to get started. Every child is different, and I prefer to focus on understanding your child’s individual strengths, needs and learning style rather than waiting for a formal diagnosis. I can support them whether they have a report, are awaiting an assessment, or simply need a little extra help with reading and writing.
-
The earlier the intervention, the better! I am able to adapt learning to all ages, but generally, I work with children up to about the age of 14, supporting them to develop confidence and strategies that work for them.
Every child is different, so if you’re unsure whether my support would be suitable for your child, please get in touch. I’m always happy to have a chat and discuss how I may be able to help.

Yes, of course. Your child’s teacher will have an important understanding of how they learn and their strengths and challenges. I am always happy to communicate with teachers if they would like. I can share feedback/progress reports with your permission.
